Tooth Whitening in the Plastic Surgery Office
One of the most sought after and easily visible beauty treatments is cosmetic tooth whitening. A great smile with white teeth is one of the most powerful contributors to a pleasing and more youthful face
Until recently, tooth whitening has only been primarily available at a dentist’s office or through over-the-counter dental strips or whitening pens. Many rapid tooth whitening systems have caused pain and sensitivity or the traditional trays and goop methid is both messy and inconvenient to wear. Over ‘the-counter whitening strips, while effective, takes weeks to see any visible results and must be used for a long time to see substantial improvement in tooth color.
A revolutionary approach to tooth whitening is a system that in one hour can increase the color of your teeth from 3 to 8 shades….and is not associated with teeth or gum sensitivity.! Using a special blend of hydrogen peroxide and silicone dioxide with a blue light accelerator, the system oxidizes pigments of your front upper and lower teeth restoring them to a more beautiful whiter color. All without heat, mouth sensitivity, or UV light exposure.Greater whitening improvements are seen with teeth stained by coffee, tea, or in those have are or have smoked in the past. Teeth with tetracycline or other antibiotic stains, teeth speckled with fluoride, or teeth with hereditary discoloration will also show good improvement. Teeth with existing cavities or cracks should not undergo whitening. Teeth with existing dental restorations such as crowns or veneers will not respond to this whitening treatment as it is effective only on natural, live teeth.
As both a physician and dentist, I have been reluctant to bring tooth whitening into my plastic surgery and spa practice. I was always concerned about whether the aestheticians could safely and comfortably provide this oral treatment to patients, an area in which they have no previous experience or training. In addition, I had concerns about creating unpleasant sensitivities of teeth or gums which has been the experience with a lot of patients who have previously had rapid teeth whitening. However, the simplicity and safety of cold light acceleration and its low risk of tooth or gum sensitivity make this new variation of in-office hydrogen peroxide trteatment very appealing. It is a natural fit to any of the currenjt aesthetic treatments that we rountinuely do in the office. It can also be easily combined with other aesthetic treatments whether it be microdermabrasion, Botox, injectable fillers, pulsed light therapies, or laser skin treatments. It is easy to see the dual benefit, for example, of lip injections for size increase and undelying tooth whitening. It can literally be combined with just about any aesthetic or spa treatment. It also helps brings closer the concept of a ‘one-stop’ beauty service location.

Medical Loans: The all inclusive Savior
Every one of us has one time or another used a personal loan to pay off their medical expenses when money falls short or when they lack medical insurance to cover the costs. How ever, now, there is a more suitable loan product for this purpose; this is in the form of general medical loans. These products are tailored to meet a borrower’s inclusive medical bills. Some time due to lack of money some urgent medical procedure which could have saved a person is postponed due to lack of money. Fortunately, this should no longer be a hurdle, medical loans have stepped up to take care of this and can be used for any type of a medical procedure.
All types of procedures can be taken care off by the help of the medical loans. Even if you are you are covered by your insurance, or you are covered by such medical schemes like NHS and you want your favorite doctor to operate on you, then you can go ahead and apply for a medical loan for financing the operation.
How ever, you should be aware that medical loans are normally used for financing elective treatments, for instance plastic surgery or cosmetic treatments which not covered by your insurance or the NHS. These treatments can only be covered only if they occur under certain circumstances (accidents, burns or diseases cosmetic problems, and others)
The interest charged on loans for financing a full medical procedure is significantly low if compared to other loans, such as the ones imposed on credit cards. To add more on this, medical loans are easier to budget for because the amounts to pay on monthly bases are fixed. You also have the option of deciding how much you want to be repaying when the loan falls due with your lender. Medical loans are both secured and unsecured. When you take a secured medical loan, your asset acts as the pledge against the loan advanced. The rate of interest here is lower as compared to unsecured loans. You can also get whatever amounts you require as long as your asset is valuable enough. The more valuable to higher the loan amounts that can be advanced to you and the opposite is true. When you take out the loan in the unsecured form, the amounts that can be advanced are limited. The limitation normally is pegged to your monthly income and your ability to make the repayment installments.
The merit of taking out these medical loans lies in the fact that the money is not limited to traditional medical procedures only, even cosmetic surgery is incorporated, in other words you can do whatever you want with the loan amounts as long as it is medical in nature.

12 Tips for the Would be Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Patient
By: Edwin Paul Magallona, MD
1. Don’t be a victim of deception, false advertisement and publicity regarding the specialty of Plastic Surgery. While the internet is a very powerful tool for advertisement and promotion, keep in mind though that not everything in the net is likewise necessarily true.
2. Do check and make sure that you are consulting and putting your trust in a certified plastic surgeon; one who has completed training according to the standards set by the official Board of Plastic Surgery in your country. Nowadays cosmetic surgery is so lucrative that some doctors, medical personnel and even non doctors attempt to learn and practice the specialty without the proper and formal training. Remember that there are no shortcuts to establishing a good foundation for plastic surgery. A strong foundation, whether we like it or not, does have a significant effect on preoperative planning, course of surgery and final surgical outcome.
3. Feel free to further inquire about your plastic surgeon’s background and training. This is one way of establishing trust, confidence, rapport and making yourself comfortable as well. A formally trained surgeon would not be expected to hide his hard earned credentials.
4. Do not hesitate to ask anything and everything about your problem and/or desired operation. This is clearly not a good time to be shy. A good surgeon would be reasonably patient in hearing all his patients’ concerns. It may take several visits if necessary to fully understand what you are getting into but it would definitely be worth your time when you get the bigger and better picture of things.
5. Understand that you cannot just pick out from any magazine a physical feature that you like and have it copied. It is just not possible. Cosmetic plastic surgery is supposed to enhance and improve on existing physical features. Remember that you can never “shop” for a nose.
6. Make sure you completely and wholeheartedly understand not only the benefits of your contemplated surgery but also the risks involved in each procedure. This is the reality that each patient must face and the surgeon will expertly address if necessary. Remember that just like as we go about in our daily lives, there are risks involved in everything we do whether it be big or small, minor or major. It is indeed something universal. The certified plastic surgeon however is trained to handle all possible complications. This comes with adequate surgical exposure and long years of training.
7. Be aware that during your surgery, your plastic surgeon will provide the highest level of skill, judgment and care. He has undergone extensive training as to equip him with such. Likewise always remember that no physician in his right mind would want to deliberately or accidentally inflict any harm on his patients. Surgeons are forever guided by this doctrine of “First, do no harm”.
8. Understand that despite long briefing and discussions prior to surgery, a good plastic surgeon knows that post operatively, a patient may still have anxieties and newfound concerns. Don’t hesitate to call up or get in touch. A compassionate surgeon will most often provide that comforting response. Remember that the commitment and care of your surgeon doesn’t end with the last stitch.
9. Make sure all instructions post operatively are fully understood and followed religiously. Cooperate with your plastic surgeon to minimize problems and complications.
10. No two sides of the human body are perfectly symmetrical and equal. It follows that surgical outcome will never have perfectly equal measurements. Remember that literally nobody is perfect.
11. A perfect result is never guaranteed. Patient and surgeon are but human, however in the hands of a certified plastic surgeon, one is better off and in the best position of having very good, satisfying and realistic results.
12. The patient has every right to inquire regarding details of the fees and other charges. Discounts may be reasonably given at the discretion of your surgeon. However the patient must always keep in mind that he/she is not shopping for the cheapest pork around. It could be a disastrous decision if one would be solely guided by just searching for the cheapest surgical package. Remember to always treat your plastic surgeon and his specialty professionally and in turn you will surely get great value for your money.

When Health Insurance Covers Cosmetic Surgery
In most cases cosmetic surgery is considered optional and as such, most health insurance plans will not cover it. There are instances, however, when cosmetic surgery is medically necessary and is thus, covered under health insurance plans. For example, if you are in an accident such as a fire or automobile accident, especially when injuries to your face result, this falls into the category of medical treatment rather than surgery solely for cosmetic reasons. The same holds true for some conditions with which you are born that can cause problems with your vision, smell, hearing, or eating.
In young children, health insurance often covers cosmetic surgery for conditions that appear to be cosmetic in nature but that may have a detrimental effect on their emotional growth and well-being. There are certain things that are important to children that should be of less importance to adults. Appearances that are harmed because of some type of gestational or early childhood condition should not deter their emotional growth. Fortunately, insurance companies understand this when it comes to children, but in adults, it’s a different story. Unless you need cosmetic surgery for a condition that is accident-related or is inhibiting your bodily functions in any way, they will not pay.
Of course, it is not fair to say insurance companies should cover all cosmetic surgery, because some people are just vain and have no justifiable reason to undergo cosmetic surgery. There needs to be a standard for treatment. However, it shouldn’t have anything to do with age, but rather the physical or emotional impact the condition has on the patient. Too many times it is assumed that adults bear less emotional scars as a result of a disfiguring condition, but that is not always true.
Health insurance covers any kind of accident related injury, including those caused by fire, automobile accident, or any kind of chemical or other type of spill that affects the skin. We mostly think of severe burns when skin grafts are necessary, but sometimes even severe cuts require the skill of a plastic surgeon in order to prevent permanent scarring, especially in young children. Cosmetic surgery has come a long way in the past few years, and conditions that were untreatable even a couple of decades ago can now be treated. Even now conditions that were once considered cosmetic are fully covered by health insurance because of the effect on both the physical and emotional health of the patient.
Of course, there are some things that insurance companies should cover that they still consider cosmetic in many cases, such as removal of skin cancer lesions, scars from moles and acne, and other types of “minor” skin imperfections. Sometimes even for adults, insurance companies consider scars from injuries cosmetic, even if they are obvious enough to cause the patient to feel self-conscious. There needs to be a standard that applies to all of humankind, no matter what the age or gender. Until that happens, one can only say that insurance companies are discriminatory when it applies to cosmetic surgery financing.
