Cosmetic Surgery – How Far is Too Far?

admin asked:

For some, self improvement can become an obsession and this can be due to bullying in childhood years or perhaps as a result of psychological disorder.

Whatever the reason, the results can be startling to say the least. Theoretically and certainly ethically, any cosmetic surgeon worth their salt should refuse to give treatment to anyone who is clearly taking things too far.

There are many examples of people going that little bit too far, mostly behind closed doors but in a few cases very publicly. The worrying thing is, it might not just be your self esteem that’s damaged and you could be putting your health at risk too.

Take the recent case of a woman from Korea whose obsession with looking good led her to inject cooking oil into her face in the hope that she would beautify her appearance further. The result was that unfortunately her face was left disfigured beyond recognition.

Over a 20 year period the woman had operation after operation meaning that eventually her face was left disfigured but she would still see herself as beautiful. Eventually the more ethical of the surgeons she visited refused to carry out further procedures.

She was then able to find a clinic who supplied her with medical grade silicon and a syringe which she used to carry on filling her face at home. This type of procedure should be carried out carefully and is not suitable for every area of the face – allowing a client to take this type of filler home and inject it themselves is astonishing and most certainly gross misconduct.

When this eventually ran out she turned to the next best thing – cooking oil – and this caused such a reaction that her face was unrecognisable by her own parents. Injecting any substance into your face is risky and even approved fillers may not be suitable for everyone. For these fillers a compatibility test should be undertaken and the procedure should not be carried out on the same day.

There was a happy ending of sorts in that due to the publicity of the case, donations were received which allowed for corrective surgery. Unfortunately due to the extent of the damage the woman’s face is still largely unrecognisable.

The moral of the story it seems is to think any procedure through carefully before you go ahead with it to ensure you will be happy with the results. If you use a reputable surgeon you will be taken through a consultation process to ensure that you are making the decision with a sound mind and that you are in fit health in order to be able to receive it.

If you are considering cosmetic surgery procedures in the UK such as breast augmentation you should seek an accredited surgeon who is registered with BAPRAS or BAAPS to ensure this plastic surgery runs smoothly.

Find A Great Plastic Surgeon

admin asked:

The world of plastic and cosmetic surgery has blossomed into a multi-billion dollar industry in recent years. The abundance of demand for enhancement and augmentation has also been mirrored by an abundance of supply – the number of plastic surgeons and clinics offering cosmetic or plastic procedures has risen at a stellar rate, one which unfortunately has meant that not all offering the service have the proper credentials to be performing such delicate operations, and many people wanting surgery are unwisely seeking cheaper procedures offshore.

This is why if you have decided that you want cosmetic enhancement, such as breast enlargement or augmentation finding a board certified plastic surgeon is a must.

What is meant by ‘board certified’?

The American Board of Plastic Surgery is the largest organization specializing in plastic surgery in the world. It was established in order to provide consistently high standards and to regulate the plastic surgery industry. When a surgeon is board certified, it means that they have completed a plastic surgery residency – a minimum of three years on top of their surgical studies which is usually around six years. They will then have to pass the board examination in order for them to be eligible for board certification.

It is important to note that cosmetic and plastic surgery are two different disciplines, so a cosmetic surgeon may be qualified to practice without being certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. If you are looking for a plastic surgeon though, it is essential to go with a certified practitioner because you know that there is a regulatory body behind them with extremely high standards that members must maintain.

Board certified practitioners should not cost any more than other qualified surgeons, as competition will keep prices within a reasonably stable medium. Just be wary of surgeons offering procedures far below the average – you will find that most that do are not certified.

Board certification, whilst an important first step, should not be the only requirement you look for in a practitioner. Specialisation in cosmetic enhancement and augmentation is extremely important when finding a surgeon for breast enlargement or any other procedure, as some plastic surgeons are not specialised in these areas, rather in reconstruction and post-accident surgery such as skin graphing etc. You should approach your search as you would approach finding any other health care professional – after all, you wouldn’t go to an stomach specialist for a chest infection.

Finding a certified surgeon in your area

Finding a certified surgeon close to you shouldn’t be too hard, in fact the American Board of Plastic Surgery has made it super easy – they have a referral page on their website which allows you to search surgeons by their locale. They also allow you to search surgeons by surname – so if you have found a surgeon but are not sure if they are certified you can check discreetly online.

Finding the right plastic surgeon for your procedure is they key step to finding the new you – so make sure you do your research, and find a board certified plastic surgeon.

When was Plastic Surgery First Invented?

jewellery asked:

As long ago as 2000 BC, surgeons in India were carrying out reconstructive techniques like skin grafts. It wasn’t until the late 18th century that western physicians traveled to India to learn about procedures like rhinoplasty. A surgeon named Joseph Constantine Carpue spend two decades in India learning plastic surgery methods. Carpue returned to the west and performed the first major plastic surgery in the western world in 1815.

The ancient Egyptians and Romans also carried out plastic surgery procedures. Romans were able to do such procedures as repairing ears that had been damaged from about the first century B.C.

While plastic surgery techniques evolved very slowly over the centuries, the horribly disfiguring wounds suffered by soldiers during World War I drove a need to develop techniques for reconstructive surgery. Sadly, World War II provided many more patients with disfiguring injuries such as severe burns. One of the most prominent practitioners at that time was Archibald McIndoe, who is also credited with performing the first male to female sex change operation.

In the 20th century in the United States, plastic surgery evolved far more rapidly. A surgeon from St. Louis named Vilray Blair used innovative techniques to treat World War I soldiers with complex facial injuries. His scientific paper, “Reconstructive Surgery of the Face” became the standard reference for facial reconstruction.

In the first half of the 20th century plastic surgery was generally considered a medically necessary set of procedures to reconstruct faces and sometimes other body parts of people who had been injured in accidents or fires, or who had had to undergo disfiguring surgery. By the second half of the 20th century, with the oldest baby boomers reaching adulthood, plastic surgery as a cosmetic pursuit began to gain traction.

Many young people – mostly young women – had rhinoplasty in attempts to have a more refined, feminine nose. The first breast implants came along in the 1960s, though they didn’t take off in popularity until the 1980s and 1990s. But noses and breasts weren’t all that were subject to surgical intervention. By the end of the 20th century, surgeons were regularly using techniques like liposuction, face lifts, and eye lifts. The pace has accelerated in the 21st century.

Plastic surgery is more common than ever these days, with the general increase in standard of living over the 20th century coupled with the massive baby boom generation aging and wanting to turn back the effects of time. The evolution and popularity of plastic surgery procedures show no signs of abating any time soon.

Abdominoplasty/ Tummytuck Philippines: Affordable Cosmetic Plastic Surgery

jewellery asked:

By: Edwin Paul Magallona, MD

Abdominoplasty, commonly known as Tummytuck, is a cosmetic and aesthetic procedure to remove excess lower abdominal skin and its attached layer of fat, with simultaneous tightening of the abdominal wall. This creates a flatter abdomen with elimination of loose skin, stretch marks and post surgical scars below the umbilicus (commonly vertical caesarian section scars). The protruberant appearance is likewise addressed by way of tightening of the muscle and fascial layers. Most patients who undergo this procedure are those who have had multiple pregnancies or those coming off major weight loss.

The first step a potential patient would have to do is a an informative and meaningful consultation and visit with a certified cosmetic plastic surgeon. The patient is expected to discuss all expectations with regards to looking and feeling better after the abdominoplasty or tummytuck. She should keep in mind however though that the aceeptable outcome is basically reasonable improvement and enhancement and never impossible and unachievable “perfection”. Emotional stability in a potential patient is a minimum requirement while reasonable expectation is a must. Having a “new” look from an abdominoplasty will never guarantee a financially rewarding and successful career or even a happy and problem free marriage. It solely improves appearance and possibly helps boosts self confidence. This is realistically what a tummytuck may just accomplish for you. How you handle the positive physical effects and gains of an abdominoplasty is actually up to you. It should be kept in mind that the objective of a tummytuck is a flatter abdomen devoid of most of the unsightly stretch marks and previous operative scar.

A straightforward abdominoplasty takes approximately 3-4 hours to complete however it may take longer if combined with other cosmetic plastic surgery procedures as liposuction or some other facial or body surgeries. The procedure may be safely done in an outpatient setting or on a hospital basis under general anesthesia. Once under general anesthesia one will be sleeping soundly all throughout surgery. At times it may be done under spinal or epidural anesthesia especially in hospital settings.

The incision is done from hip to hip just above the pubic area. Another incision is made around the belly button to free it from the abdominal skin. The abdominal skin and underlying fat is then elevated from the abdominal wall revealing the muscle and fascial layer to be tightened. After tightening, the excess skin is removed and the wounds are closed. The preserved belly button stalk is then brought out through a new hole in the abdominal skin. Liposuction is commonly performed in safe areas to give a better definition and form.

Closure of the incisions are always carefully and meticulously done by your cosmetic plastic surgeon. All patients should keep in mind though that scars are realistically inevitable and are natural consequences of any incision or surgery, your cosmetic plastic surgeon will try his best to keep them inconspicuous and well concealed as possible. Following surgery, dressings and bandage will be applied over the wounds and abdomen while closed suction drains will have to be maintained for a few days to facilitate drainage of any expected fluid.

Operative risks and side effects in cosmetic plastic surgeries are always possible. Bleeding, infection, fluid accumulations, vascular compromise, paresthesias, and healing problems may occur though not that common. Patients are therefore properly cleared and screened by the surgical team while the patient wholeheartedly understands all the possibilities. Any pain or discomfort may be effectively controlled more often than not by the right oral medications. It is prudent however to inform your plastic surgeon or any staff member of any unusual and persistent problems. Swelling and bruising are common and expected and usually resolve in a few weeks. A sense of numbness and tightness may be present which eventually improves and subsides. Post abdominoplasty patients are instructed rest for at least a day and ordered to avoid any exertions. Sutures and drains will usually be out after a week while an abdominal binder shall have to maintained for weeks. Most patients do return to work after approximately 2-3 weeks. Optimal results are seen after about 3 months.

For the potential plastic surgery patient in general, it is strongly advised to consult with a certified plastic surgeon . Patients are strongly encouraged to ask around and be properly and thoroughly informed regarding the procedures they seek. Your certified cosmetic plastic surgeon will display adequate knowledge, skill and care prior, during and after surgery.

Breast Reconstruction Surgery Options

jewellery asked:

Breast reconstruction is one of the most popular types of surgeries performed by plastic surgeons. There are many different reasons for this. Women who consider this type of surgery need to be aware of the different types of breast reconstruction surgery options available to them, as well as the advantages and disadvantages associated with each one. Here are some of the things that you may be interested in knowing about breast reconstruction.

Why Women Have Breast Reconstruction Surgery

Breast reconstruction surgery can be a confidence boosting, mentally uplifting option for many women. The main reason that women consider different breast reconstruction surgery options is to enhance the appearance of their breasts. However, every woman’s reasons for wanting to do so may vary. Some women may simply be unsatisfied with the way that their breasts look. Others may be unsatisfied or unconfident with the way that they look after having breast cancer surgeries, such as mastectomies or lumpectomies, which may alter the appearance of their breasts.

Breast Reconstruction Surgery Options

If you’ve already decided that you want to enhance the appearance of your breasts, it’s important to talk to your doctor about the different breast reconstruction surgery options that are available to you. Since every woman’s situation is different, the surgery options that are available to her may vary. Here are three of the breast reconstruction surgery options that you may want to know more about:

Breast Implants

Breast implants are, by far, the most well known breast reconstruction surgery option. This procedure involves inserting a saline or silicone implant beneath the skin. Unlike a few of the other breast reconstruction surgery options, implants do require two surgeries. First, a balloon will need to be inflated beneath the skin. This is to ensure that there will be enough room for the permanent implant, which will be inserted at a later date.

Despite the two required surgeries, the implant procedure does offer a few benefits. The operations themselves may only take between 30 and 60 minutes. Only a two-day stay will be required in the hospital. Recovery should take place within two to three weeks, which is relatively short in comparison to many of the other breast reconstruction surgery options.

Although breast implants can be ideal for some people, it’s not the best choice for everyone. It is one of the breast reconstruction surgery options that does not always work effectively and can provide unnatural results. Multiple surgeries, in addition to the two routine parts of the operation, are often necessary for the desired results.

Transverse Rectus Abdominal Musculocutaneous (TRAM) Flap

TRAM Flap is one of the most common breast reconstruction surgery options performed. The procedure works by creating a new breast from the muscle, fat and skin of the abdominal area. There are both pros and cons associated with TRAM Flap.

Of all the breast reconstruction surgery options, TRAM Flap takes the longest amount of time. Four to six hours are required for it to be performed. Additionally, five to seven days will need to be spent in the hospital. Recovery time is about six weeks. Since this is a major surgery, women who choose this breast construction surgery option should be very healthy.

Although TRAM Flap takes a lot of time to perform and recover from, it is known to produce the most realistic appearance. Reshaping is often unnecessary because the results will usually be close to perfect and permanent. One of the reasons that this is also considered one of the most ideal breast reconstruction surgery options is because the tummy will also become flatter.

Latissimus Dorsi (LD) Flap

Another one of the breast reconstruction surgery options that is available to choose from is LD Flap. This procedure usually works through a combination of two methods. Muscle, skin and fat from the back are used to create a new breast. Usually, saline or silicone implants also need to be used in order to create a breast that is large enough.

LD Flap is one of the breast reconstruction surgery options known to produce very good results. If any implants are used, it’s possible that they may need to be fixed in the future. Usually, however, the breast will look very natural because real skin is being used.

In terms of how long it takes to undergo and recover from surgery, LD Flap is the most moderate of the three breast reconstruction surgery options. It takes a longer time than implant surgery, but less time than TRAM Flap surgery. You can expect it to take three to four hours to perform, a two to three day hospital stay and three to six weeks to recover from. Women should be healthy before considering this as one of the breast reconstruction surgery options.

How to Decide Which Option is for You

To determine which of the breast reconstruction surgery options is right for you; several factors need to be taken into consideration. Depending on what type of results you are hoping for, a specific type of surgery may or may not be for you. Your health at the time will also need to be taken into consideration, because you should be ready for moderate or major surgery for two of these surgery options. It’s also important to consider which of the breast reconstruction surgery options can provide you with the longest results. Before making a decision, it’s important to have a thorough conversation with your doctor about which breast reconstruction surgery is ideal for you.

Funding Cosmetic Surgery

admin asked:

Cosmetic surgery is rarely a cheap process. From initial consultations through to the operation and the recovery process, cosmetic surgery can be costly in terms of both your health and your finances. Of course ninety nine times out of a hundred cosmetic procedures are carried out competently and with no side effects lasting beyond the initial recovery period. However this can only be guaranteed by opting for a fully qualified consultant surgeon who knows his business and charges accordingly. In other words, when you’re preparing for a cosmetic procedure it’s important to get out and find a good surgeon, even though he may prove more expensive.

What this means is that most people will be required to find a way of financing their cosmetic procedure, whilst also ensuring that they don’t end up causing themselves any health problems along the way. Whilst it is possible to raise finance for this kind of procedure, it’s probably better to initially make some lifestyle changes in order to be able to afford to contribute as much as possible to the final bill as possible before it arises.

If you are totally sure you want to embark on a particular cosmetic procedure, your first action plan is to go and see a consultant surgeon who would be willing to perform the operation for you. The first session is usually free, and this is the ideal time to ask exactly what his qualifications are, how many successful procedures he has carried out, what the process will involve and more importantly how much it’s all going to cost. Finally if you’ve decided after all that that you do want to go ahead with the procedure it’s time to look at ways of paying your bill.

Certain practices will offer you the availability of credit payments on your surgery, in other words will allow you to make up your payments over a period of time in order to relieve the immediate financial burden. However don’t expect this to be provided free of charge. More often than not you will be charged a staggeringly high APR on this kind of credit, which will end up resulting in overpayment on your behalf.

A far more effective way to pay for your procedure is through third party financing agreements such as credit cards or short term loans. Alternatively, depending on the size of your available overdraft you may be able to fund part of the purchase from that service, which can prove to be far more cost effective than financing through the credit arrangements offered at the surgery.

Of course you could also simply go work another job for the months running up to your procedure in order to raise the finance, although this might leave you feeling tired and run down – not the best way to approach a serious cosmetic procedure! However you choose to finance your cosmetic surgery, make sure it’s worth it and that it’s spent with a qualified professional surgeon who knows the ropes.

What to Expect Before and After your Breast Augmentation Surgery

admin asked:

In your initial consultation with your plastic surgeon, prepare to discuss your goals for your body and what you would like to achieve through breast augmentation surgery. Your surgeon will evaluate your current health and review your medical history to ensure that you are a good candidate for the surgery. Be sure you’re completely honest with your surgeon about your health. Let him know about any medications, supplements or vitamins that you are taking. Also, if you are a smoker, be sure that your surgeon is aware of this.

If your doctor confirms that you are healthy and strong enough to undergo the procedure, then you will begin to discuss the specifics of your surgery. Your surgeon will help you to pick the best type of implant and kind of breast augmentation surgery to meet your needs. Once you have chosen an implant, your surgeon should be able to supply you with information from the manufacturer about the implant. Be sure to ask for this literature and read it thoroughly before you head in for surgery. There are a number of different surgical techniques that can be applied during breast augmentation surgery. For example, if your skin is prone to very visible scarring, your doctor may recommend a type of incision that leaves minimal scars. Furthermore, if your breasts have sagged, he may discuss the option of including a breast lift during your augmentation surgery. Finally, your surgeon should speak with you about the type of anesthesia used during your breast augmentation surgery, as well as the type of facility where the surgery will be performed.

Also, in order to prepare for your breast augmentation surgery, be sure to completely review the costs involved. Most health insurance companies do not consider breast augmentation surgeries to be medically necessary. However, if you are having breast augmentation surgery after a mastectomy or in order to repair your physique after an accident, your insurance may pay for all or part of the surgery. Be sure to speak with both your insurance company and your doctor about the costs involved with your breast augmentation surgery before going through with the procedure.

Preparing for Your Breast Augmentation Surgery

Your surgeon will give you some pre-operative guidelines to follow before your breast augmentation surgery. The information will likely include a program for eating, drinking and the intake of vitamins and minerals in the days before your procedure. If you are a smoker, your surgeon will probably urge you to quit or at least cease smoking for a certain period of time prior to your breast augmentation surgery. Furthermore, you may be required to have a mammogram, which is used to compare the health of your breasts before and after your surgery.

Before you can continue with your plans for breast augmentation, expect to sign a consent form stating that you understand the procedure and the responsibilities of taking care of your breasts once the surgery is complete. In some cases, you may have to undergo a waiting period of a number of days or weeks between signing the paperwork and having your surgery. Be sure to read this form closely and discuss the risks of breast augmentation surgery in detail with your doctor. Once you have scheduled your surgery, be sure you have someone who can take care of you during the first few days after your surgery. At the very least, you will need to have someone who can drive you home after your breast augmentation surgery. It is best, however, to have a friend, family member or spouse on hand for two or more days after augmentation.

What to Expect After Your Surgery

Although you will almost certainly be sore and tired in the days after your surgery, you will most likely be able to get out of bed and resume light activity within one to two days. However, it is very important not to engage in any rigorous activity, including workout regimens, for some weeks after surgery. Your doctor will prescribe pain medication to help with the discomfort caused by the surgery and will advise you about acceptable levels of activity for the days and weeks afterwards.

Within a week after your surgery, you will return to your doctor to have your gauze dressings removed. At this time, your surgeon may give you a surgical bra to wear with new instructions about how to care for your breasts. Any stitches will probably be removed within ten days to two weeks. Be sure to speak with your doctor about how to continue to care for your breasts. Also, be sure to set up routine mammograms.

Your New Breasts

It will take two weeks, perhaps even longer, for the swelling and bruising in your breasts to dissipate. Scars, which will never disappear completely, can take many months to go away. If you are particularly worried about scarring, speak with your breast augmentation doctor about how to take good care of your incisions and also inquire about scar-reducing formulas. It can take many weeks before you see the final result of your breast augmentation surgery. One of the best ways to see the results of your breast augmentation is to take before and after photos.

What is beauty all about? How can we say whether a thing is beautiful or not, by our eyes? Is beauty only about what is shown externally? Let us find out.

As a result of this, they pulled away themselves from the society, making them dumb, but thanks to some concerned groups like the plastic surgery organization because this people with body deformities may now have the change that they have been waiting.

But in order for them to render the said service, the organization has certified volunteer plastic surgeons to do the risky operation.
